What's in a Name?

Shelter Services for Women changes its name after 25 years! The new name is Domestic Violence Solutions for Santa Barbara County.

  Why a new name?

  • The new name better reflects the bredth of services provided by Shelter Services for Women.
  • People thought we only served women and only provided shelter.
  • To ensure that the agency is not perceived as "for women" and "against men".

  Why this specific name?

  • This new name puts the words "domestic violence" in the forefront.
  • This is important because "domestic violence feeds on silence."
  • By saying the words, we bring the problem to the light of day.
  • By saying the words, we directly address society's denial and minimizing of the issue.
This new name also focuses on the positive aspect of our work: SOLUTIONS.
  • We believe that all the work we do is part of the solution.
  • We need to be proactive to achieve real solutions.
  • Part of the reason for incorporating the work of AMCS into our work is that we can thus be more proactive in finding solutions to domestic violence.
  • We believe that every man, woman, and child in Santa Barbara County must be part of the solution if we are to end the intergenerational cycle of violence.
