Ending violence:  A call to men!

(and the women who love them)

“To end violence against women, men who don’t see themselves as part of the problem need to get involved.”

--Anthony Porter

On Saturday, October 22, nationally renowned domestic violence educator Anthony Porter will lead an all-day workshop on, “Ending violence: A call to men and the women who love them.”  The workshop will address the role “well-meaning men” must play in ending intimate partner violence.

Porter believes that “violence is not a women’s issue. It’s a socialization issue, which benefits men in maintaining a position of entitlement, while women are viewed as having less value, as being property, and as being sex objects.”

The day’s discussion will focus on creating a shift in social norms so that we can “redefine manhood and produce a national movement of men committed to ending violence against women.”

About Anthony Porter

Anthony Porter is an educator and activist who has worked in the social justice arena for more than 20 years.  A gifted public speaker, Anthony is the co-founder of “A Call to Men: National Association of Men and Women Committed to Ending Violence Against Women.”  His interest in this work began more than 10 years ago, as a faculty member of a nationally recognized batterers’ treatment program.  Frustrated by the after-the-fact, criminal justice approach and his own desire to reach larger audiences of men with a consciousness-raising message of change, Anthony began honing a seminar training program addressing men’s violence against women.  Anthony was a dramatic speaker at MADV’s “Call to Men” program in August 2004 and we are proud to have him return to Santa Barbara.
